Have you ever been to one of them?
Psychologist Vs. Psychiatrist
More and more people misunderstand the terms of psychologist and psychiatrist, this is why they also tend to use them in an unappropriate way. There is a huge difference between psychologist and psychiatrist and all of us should know it, because you never know when you will need one of them.
The psychologist is that person that listens. Listens to your problems, your phobias, your fears or your frustrations. I have personally been to a psychologist a few times in the past and I can say she really helped me. It`s like you`re talking to a friend. The psychologist WILL guarantee your discretion, it`s just like you are going to confession and the priest must not say a word about your conversation with him. Same goes with the psychologist, the psychologist helps you with your problems, tries to explain and offers alternatives for solving them.
The psychiatrist on the other hand is the one that deals with the mentally ill. And when I say mentally ill I mean people with a certain mental disorder. The psychiatrist is the one that prescribes you medication in order for your disease to cure or at least to maintain it at the same level. The psychiatrist is there for your mental health issues only.
I think you`ve all guessed the difference between psychologist and psychiatrist. Now we should think twice before laughing of somebody that tells us he`s been to a psychologist. Everybody needs some good piece of advice once inĀ while, and believe me the psychologist can really offer you that, while a psychiatrist (also reffere to as shrink) will do nothing but give you Xanax and Prozac. You can be tamed with the right medicine, hehe.
When it comes to psychology, we use to think of that branch of the sicence that deals with brain and its complexity. There are all sorts of psychologists such as school psychologists, child psychologists and others. They usually deal with depressions and anxiety. Although a psychologist may hold a PHD, he is not a doctor so do not expect him or her to cure you from headaches or tonsilitis.
Psychotherapy is a method of treatment that was settled by Sigmund Freud. It is mainly based on listening to patients`s stories regarding their lives while the psychotherapist carefully analyzes the childhood of the patient to see if there was any major trauma or unconscious feelings that may have led to something a bit more serious in the present.
In conclusion, you can go to the psychologist because he or she is a trustworthy person and can really help whenever you need somebody to listen to you or give you a piece of advice. I`m telling you this from my very personal experience, the psychologist can help you change your distorted perception on the world.
