Gay sex: Myths and Facts

September 19, 2012 |  by

Most straight, or heterosexual, individuals have some misconstrued concepts of gay sex. It is not uncommon to find people who believe that homosexuals are more promiscuous, more prone to disease or dysfunction, or even more perverse. These are ignorant assumptions.

Myths and Facts

The truth about homosexuality is that it is not so different. Outside of the emotion involved with discovering one’s sexuality may be considered unacceptable, it is much the same as heterosexuality. For many individuals, it is very difficult to accept and become comfortable with a still controversial sexual orientation. “Coming out” is normally a very stressful experience for most, but ultimately it is freeing. The most difficult hurdle is overcoming the prejudice that surrounds homosexuality.

Gay and lesbian relationships are much like straight relationships in that they rely heavily on emotional connections. A same sex relationship is not necessarily a more actively sexual relationship or a more perverse relationship by comparison. Homosexual individuals have the same range of sexual lifestyles as the general community. They can be strong and committed, open, or be fraught with infidelity, just as often as heterosexual relationships.

The idea that passive partners are “less male” is a myth. Similar is the myth that lesbians are either aggressive or passive. These are personality traits that exist in all people, and are not decided by sexual orientation. Gay relationships are equal in most cases and do not necessarily have an aggressive versus passive nature.

Sexual Activity

Anal sex in gay men is still very much a taboo subject – despite the fact that straight couples also practice the activity. Simply because a man is gay does not mean he enjoys or practices anal sex. Gay men also interact sexual through mutual masturbation and oral sex. Many homosexual men do not practice anal sex at all. In fact when considering the sexual orientation of men who find anal sex appealing it is often straight men that will admit an interest.

Lesbian couples are generally more accepted, and this may be due to their popularity in adult entertainment. Homosexual women express themselves sexually through mutual masturbation, caressing, digital penetration and the use of sex toys. In rare cases, lesbian couples may practice more extreme methods of sexual activity such as "fisting", but this is a quite rare form of sex among lesbians.

In the end, homosexuality and heterosexuality refer only to gender preference. The misconception that gay sex is extreme, disgusting, and dangerous has outlived its time and should be laid to rest. Many gay couples have completely healthy relationships, and that includes their sex lives.
